What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is well known as the treatment of choice for back, neck and shoulder pain, headaches and joint strains, but it is much more. It is a comprehensive and complete health care discipline. Osteopaths treat the individual rather than the current generic one size fits all approach. It takes five years full time training to qualify as an osteopath.

In the USA, where osteopathy originated, osteopaths operate as “doctors” in all 50 states and the armed forces. Qualified osteopaths have practiced in Europe since the beginning of the last century.

Osteopathy works with the body to enhance and restore health and wellbeing. The musculoskeletal system which comprises more than sixty percent of the total body structure is accessible to the osteopaths’ trained and skilled hands. During treatment connections are made through the nervous system to other body systems. Therefore it is possible to influence the whole body towards balanced health. Of course nutrition, environmental factors, acute infections and other stressors need  to be taken into account and osteopathy can assist the body to deal with these issues. Through improving all aspects of the body’s functioning, osteopathy facilitates the return to health.

Osteopaths use gentle manipulation in their treatments. (However these manipulations should not be confused with the violent manoeuvres sometimes performed by other practitioners). Treatments are gentle, non-invasive; do not require drugs, anaesthetics or surgical procedures.
